How to Check Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid Change

You might know how to check your oil levels or your tire pressure, but how often do you check your transmission fluid? Knowing how to check your transmission fluid can save you a world of trouble down the road in Lincoln, and luckily, it’s not difficult to do. Learn the simple steps below, and be sure to visit the Sid Dillon Ford Crete service center for more information.

Sealed vs. Standard Transmission

Before we get into how to check your transmission fluid and answer, “How often do you check your transmission fluid?”, it’s good to know what type of transmission you have. Pop the hood of your car and look for the dipstick. If you find a dipstick, you have a standard transmission. If you don’t see one, check your owner’s manual. You probably have a sealed transmission, and you’ll need to get your transmission checked at a service center instead – especially if you notice any strange noises or delays when changing gears around Omaha.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

If you have a standard transmission, we recommend that you check your fluid levels every month. This is also a great time to check out your engine oil levels, your power steering fluid, and other essential automotive components. Your owner’s manual will have great information about your make and model, or just give us a call at Sid Dillon Ford Crete.

Steps to Check Your Transmission Fluid

Checking your transmission fluid levels just takes a few minutes of your time, and it can save you from costly issues in the future.

  1. Turn on the engine to warm up the transmission fluid.
  2. Park on a level surface to make sure you check the fluid levels properly.
  3. Open the hood and find the dipstick. It is generally to the right of the oil dipstick, but your owner’s manual will have a diagram.
  4. Pull the dipstick out and touch the fluid with your fingers. It should be clear with a slight pink tinge, and it should feel smooth. If it feels gritty or smells burnt, schedule a service.
  5. Wipe off the dipstick with a rag and put it back in the reservoir. Pull it back out to check the fluid levels. If the fluid line does not reach the “Full” markings, then you’ll need to add more transmission fluid with a funnel. Do not overfill.

Keep in mind that automatic transmissions are straightforward, but manual transmissions can be a little more complicated with the plug located under the car. Consider scheduling a service instead.
